Dodgeball Rated R
By Audrey Baggs
Pete (Vince Vaughn- Old School, Starsky and Hutch)
is about to lose his gym, the comfy hang-out
"Average Joe's," to White (Ben Stiller- Meet the Parents, Zoolander), the owner
of the exercise
facility known as Globo Gym. To save the gym, he needs $50,000 in 30 days. And
that just happens
to be the purse for the winner of the big dodgeball tournament that one of
Average Joe's regulars finds
in the pages of his Obscure Sports Quarterly magazine.
So Pete and his gang of misfits decide to take their shot. The group includes
Justin Long-(television's
"Ed"), Stephen Root (Office Space), and Steve the Pirate (Alan Tudyk. After
winning the qualifying
regional title on a technicality, they are approached by the world's greatest
dodgeball coach (Rip
Torn), who reminds them "dodgeball is a sport of violence, exclusion, and
degradation" and in just
three weeks turns them into a lean, mean, fighting machine. Or at least into a
group that can duck when
a wrench is thrown their way. And they pick up a new team member who can throw
very, very hard.
Then it's off to the big game, with preliminary
skirmishes before facing the Globo team,
men-mountains who all have names like "Laser" and "Taser" plus a unibrowed woman
with very
bad teeth. All of this is just an excuse for pure silliness. This is film is for
a very mature audience
due to the language. No need to rush out to see this one.
Fahrenheit 9/11 Rated PG-13
By Audrey Baggs
Fahrenheit 9/11 is a documentary film
written, produced and directed by Michael Moore (Bowling
for Columbine). He targets President George W. Bush accusing him of doing very
little while terrorists
plotted to attack America. Moore charges that the White House allowed Saudi
royals and members of the
bin Laden family to flee the country after 9/11, when all other flights
had been grounded.
Moore asserts that Bush-family finances prompted the
invasion of Iraq. Bush attacked Saddam Hussein
when Osama Bin Laden was running around Afghanistan free. He used 9/11 as an
excuse to go to war with
Iraq. Moore portrays Bush and his cabinet at their worst moments during this
crisis. With the election
coming up in November, this film can affect the way the votes may go (in favor
of john Kerry). The White
House has responded to this film, simply, that it is not worth dignifying
with a response. Moore definitely
is trying to start his own war with the conservative group.
I think this film needs to be seen by the American
people. It shows and tells facts of the past couple of
years and may clarify questions that you might have with the War in Iraq. This
is one of the most
controversial films that have been made since the JFK film. A must see!
